A tummy time pillow is a small, firm wedge or U-shaped cushion that supports your baby's chest during tummy time. That little lift makes it easier to raise the head, look around and reach, which can turn a frustrating session into a fun one.
Does my baby need one?
No baby needs special gear for tummy time. A play mat on the floor and your face are enough. But a pillow can help if your baby:
- Struggles to lift their head off the floor and gets frustrated quickly
- Is happier propped up a little than lying flat
- Needs a reason to stay engaged, like toys to reach for
For newborns, a rolled receiving blanket under the chest does a similar job. A purpose-made pillow simply holds its shape better and adds toys.
How to position baby on a tummy time pillow
- Floor first. Put the pillow on a firm, flat surface like a play mat. Never use it on a bed, couch or other raised surface.
- Chest on the pillow. Place baby so the pillow sits under the chest and armpits, with arms forward over the front edge.
- Check the airway. Baby's mouth and nose should be clear of the pillow, with the head free to lift and turn.
- Bring the fun in front. Put toys, a mirror or your face in front of baby, about 12 to 18 inches away.
How long should each session last?
Start with a few minutes, two or three times a day, and stop when baby gets fussy. Pediatricians suggest working up to about 15 to 30 minutes of total tummy time per day by around two months, spread across short sessions (Cleveland Clinic). Mix pillow time with plain floor time so baby practices both.
Safety rules that always apply
- Awake and supervised only. Stay within arm's reach the whole time.
- Never for sleep. If baby dozes off, move them onto their back in their crib or bassinet. Babies should always sleep on their backs, on a firm, flat surface with no pillows.
- Not a positioner or lounger. Don't use a tummy time pillow to prop baby on their back or side.
- Check it regularly. Make sure seams, toys and attachments are secure, and wash it as directed.
